Activity 2.2.1 – My Daily Water Use
When I calculated the typical amount of water used in a day by an individual in my five-person household, I found that different water calculators provided me with very different results. The Southwest Florida Water Management District reports that an individual in this household uses 32 gallons of water per day, but a calculator developed by Chelan County suggests that they actually use 49 gallons of water per day. Using data from the San Antonio Water System, the daily use per person is 38.19 gallons per day. Even though these results were not the same, they were relatively close and resulted in an average of 39.73 gallons per individual. According to the water bill, the household water average for the past three months was 786 gallons lower this winter compared to previous years. Additionally, the water usage for the household was similar to other residential homes in the neighborhood, however, it was slightly above average for one month. The water usage for the entire neighborhood is higher than for the rest of the average residential neighborhoods in the surrounding area. The different calculators used for this activity estimated the usage of certain appliances to be different, which therefore caused the results to vary. Being able to visualize the average water usage per person makes it easier to use water in more mindful ways in order to incentivize wasting less. It also provides more insight on how much water is used for smaller or specific actions that can seem unimportant, such as how the length of using showers and sinks can impact the number of gallons used quite significantly.
